When wearing black isn’t enough…

This year was a first for the Golden Globes- the women chose to wear black to protest the rampant sex abuse that was brought to light in recent months. The Time’s up campaign, that 300 actresses have signed up for, have teamed up with the National Women’s Law Center and have raised $15 million over the weekend.

The awards started the dialogue too with Debra Messings questioning E! on gender pay gap, to Natalie Portman calling out the all male best director nominees, to Oprah’s speech that many termed presidential. It was a defining moment for an evening that focused on glitz and glamor and the outfits to take on something real.

But something about this felt very hollow to me. It didn’t connect at all, firstly because the issues brought to light weren’t breaking news, everyone knew about Harvey Weinstein being a pig and yet fawned over him. I get that he was powerful and you don’t mess with that, but no leading lady came to support the first accusers until there was enough media attention. Other examples: Roman Polanski got a standing ovation when he won the Oscar for Pianist, and Woody Allen got a free pass for being a genius. Yes, there is finally a united voice but in some ways, the leading ladies didn’t lead by example in the protests.

The other part is wearing black as protest almost feels like a themed party- it isn’t like a protest T-shirt where everyone is wearing the same slogan. If we are protesting the focus on dresses, maybe the solution is a boycott to “what are you wearing” questions, and if we are focusing on the sex abuse prevalent, then maybe discussing that would be a start. Instead the attention is focused on the black dress and the message is lost.

One amazing idea I saw online was if the women wore suits instead with the message they are taking the power in Hollywood. That would have been a powerful message, and one that was echoed through the evening.

It’s a step in the right direction to bring this issue to light, but let’s move past the token gesture of wearing black and have a meaningful dialogue. Let’s move the discussion forward, but real steps not fashionable twirls!

Golden Globes 2016 Fashion

Happy 2016!

With my move to UK, I couldn’t stay up and watch my staple E! red carpet… So I spent the day catching up to write my blog post…

So here it is- I will leave out the bad jokes, since Ricky Gervais hit the share during the show yesterday 🙂

jennifer-lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence (Source: Getty Images)

Jennifer Lawrence has become a pro at red carpet fashion (and winning awards!)- she wore a gorgeous oblique red Dior dress with cutouts, and a stunning 156 carats Cartier necklace. The dress is stunning, but what brought the dress home is the necklace!

olivia-wilde

Olivia Wilde (source: Getty Images)

Olivia Wilde wore a gorgeous scarlet Michael Kors sleeveless gown along with a stunning Bulgari necklace, ring and clutch. The scarlet color was my favorite this season, really stands out!

gina-rodriguez

Gina Rodriguez (Source: Getty Images)

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez wore a gorgeous off shoulder Zac Posen gown with Neil Lane diamond, emerald, and sapphire jewels. Flawless!

Jenna Dewan Tatum rocked this gorgeous sleeveless midnight blue embellished Zuhair Murad gown.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama winner Brie Larson stunned in this gold embellished Calvin Klein number with the top trend this red carpet season-cutouts and Tiffany jewels.

One of my absolute favorites Amy Adams continues her perfect streak with this bright Atelier Versace gown. Perfection!

taraji-henson

There was a lot of white on the carpet but the only one that impressed me was the Golden Globes winner Taraji Henson aka Cookie. She wore a strapless Stella McCartney gown with Kimberly McDonald for Gemfields emerald earrings.

Golden Globes 2015 Fashion Fails

Amal Alamuddin (Source: Getty Images)

Amal Alamuddin (Source: Getty Images)

I was really excited to see Amal Alamuddin’s red carpet debut- all her outfits through her romance and wedding to George Clooney were absolutely spectacular so I expected her outfits to be incredible. Amal’s gown is Dior Couture- it looks great on her but the real issue is we expected more. And the gloves did not fit- they just didn’t fit- maybe she was channeling Audrey Hepburn but didn’t work. Sorry Amal- but come on, you are better than that!

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington (Source: Getty Images)

I am a Scandal fan, more specifically, Olivia Pope fashion fan. So with this red carpet outfit designed by Mary Katrantzou, Kerry Washington has really let me down. When they first showed the top, I was excited- fitted top, interesting color- but the flare at the bottom and style is so matronly.

Guliana Rancic (Source: Getty Images)

Giuliana Rancic (Source: Getty Images)

There are so many things wrong with this picture- Giuliana Rancic what happened to you? Firstly, she has become too skinny- eat a cheeseburger woman! There is too much blonde, too much tan going on. Giuliana in this fishtail Maria Lucia Hohan gown is all wrong.

Jennifer Aniston (Source: Getty Images)

Jennifer Aniston (Source: Getty Images)

It’s a big year for Jennifer Aniston with Cake being nominated. She wore a pretty black number by Saint Laurent- the gown was just OK- it doesn’t look great on top. And the reason it made it to my fails list is the tacky $5 earrings. Come on! You are going to a red carpet event, especially one that you are nominated for- bring your A game!

Tina Fey (Source: Getty Images)

Tina Fey (Source: Getty Images)

Host for the evening Tina Fey had wardrobe changes planned, but her first outfit was a disappointment. This white/ black number by Antonio Berardi looks awkward and strange- it is on trend with the structure, but this is one of the examples of fashion victim.

Claire Danes (Source: Getty Images)

Claire Danes (Source: Getty Images)

Claire Danes is frumpy and boring in this Valentino gown.

Rosamund Pike (Source: Getty Images)

Rosamund Pike (Source: Getty Images)

Rosamund Pike chose this risque Vera Wang gown- the fitting is all wrong. I know she is proud of getting her body back 5 weeks after giving birth, but choose a better dress to flaunt!

Golden Globes 2015- Fashion Stars…

Hi guys,

So I take the role of fashion commentator very seriously! So as the new award season starts, I have my game face on and I am ready to take charge.

Here are my favorite looks!

Amy Adams (Source Getty Images)

Amy Adams (Source Getty Images)

Golden girl and red carpet star Amy Adams was stunning in a lilac one-shoulder Versace gown-it was a risky choice- the color could wash her but she rocked it!

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain (Source: Getty Images)

Jessica Chastain has always been my red carpet favorite- I love her spunk and energy! She looked stunning in this Atelier Versace gown. I loved the look on Jessica though I feel like the gown is a bit deja vu. I also didn’t like her hair style, but all in all, still a top look for the evening.

Emma Stone (Source: Getty Images)

Another star of the red carpet is Emma Stone- she has the spunk and style to surprise us time and time again. This time around, she managed to stun everyone in a Lanvin jumpsuit with sparkles and a bow. Cute and stylish!

Naomi Watts (Source: Getty Images)

Naomi Watts (Source: Getty Images)

Naomi Watts went with the color theme and chose a yellow dress by Gucci- what makes this outfit shine in my list is the Bvlgari snake neckalace. I am absolutely obsessed with it- hubby are you listening?

Dakota Johnson (Source: Getty Images)

Dakota Johnson (Source: Getty Images)

The 50 shades of grey star Dakota Johnson looked incredible in this sparkly Chanel number. Perfect outfit for the star of the most awaited movie of 2015!

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale (Source: Getty Images)

My red carpet favorite Kate Beckinsale didn’t disappoint- she rocked this plunging Elie Saab gown. With her hair up, she showed the world how to do red carpet right!

Emily Blunt (Source: Getty Images)

Emily Blunt (Source: Getty Images)

Emily Blunt was one of the stars in the popular white theme, sporting this sleeveless Michael Kors gown with cutouts. While she looked great in the gown, I wasn’t a fan of her hairstyle.

Kate Hudson (Source: Getty Images)

Kate Hudson (Source: Getty Images)

Another star in white- Kate Hudson took up the style and sex appeal scales. This risque Versace gown fits Kate as a glove and she looks incredible!

Jennifer Lopez (Source: Getty Images)

Jennifer Lopez (Source: Getty Images)

Jennifer Lopez looks like Jennifer Lopez- she is wearing her typical sequins and sparkles Zuhaid Murad gown, looking all leg and gorgeous.

Lupita Nyongo

Lupita N’yongo (Source: Getty Image)

Last year’s IT girl Lupita N’yongo rocked this floral Giambattista Valli gown- this outfit had mixed reactions. I actually loved her choice- she has less pressure, so she chose an outfit she loved- more power to you Lupita!

Golden Globes 2014 Fashion Lowdown

This is the start of another exciting award season- my favorite time of the year, where I can dream about being thin, fabulous and fitting into these glamorous gowns!

The Golden Globes was a big disappointment- there weren’t many WOW looks, a lot of the gowns looked like gowns we have seen before. There were a lot of colors- from bold reds, to canary yellows…

Here are some of the best looks!

Image

Amy Adams (Source: Getty Images)

Winner Amy Adams looked stunning in this two toned Valentino gown with plunging neckline. I love her, she is one of the biggest stars of 2013- Amy seems to be in every movie! Go Amy!

Image

Cate Blanchett (Source: Getty Images)

Another winner, Blue Jasmine star Cate Blanchett wore a gorgeous black Armani Prive gown. I loved the lacy details of the gown, and the backless style really suited Cate. What I am more obsessed about is the green diamond Chopard earrings- such class!

Image

Julianne Marguiles (Source: Getty Images)

I am obsessed with Good Wife and Julianne Marguiles- the show gets better and better with time. But I digress- I loved Julianne Marguiles’s gown. I love the black and gold concept gown by Andrew Gn- this gown got mixed reactions, but I really loved it!

Image

Margot Robbie (Source: Getty Images)

The Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie stunned in this V neck cream Gucci gown- it is hard color to look good in, but she really rocked the look!

Image

Kate Beckinsale (Source: Getty Images)

Kate Beckinsale looked stunning in this Zuhaid Murad gown- I feel like I have seen her in metallics in other award seasons, but hey if the look works then why not!

Image

Amber Heard (Source: Getty Images)

Sexy starlet Amber Heard rocked this navy blue Versace gown, showing the world her stunning legs. I am not a fan of the messy hair raising bouffant- too messy!

And here are some of the worst looks!

Sandra Bullock (Source: Getty Images)

Sandra Bullock (Source: Getty Images)

Gravity star and fan favorite Sandra Bullock wore a black, pink, and blue Prabal Gurung gown. The gown was all wrong- too many colors, not the right fit- it just did not work for her.

Julia Roberts (Source: Getty Images)

Julia Roberts (Source: Getty Images)

I was really looking forward to Julia Roberts’ return to award season- and her first look was a total disappointment. Her black and white Dolce and Gabbana gown looked more like a waitress outfit from the top.

Image

Jennifer Lawrence (Source: Getty Images)

My last award season favorite was a complete and utter disappointment in this white Dior gown. The gown looked more like a trash bag that was held together with two awkward belts. Sigh!

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Paula Patton (Source: Getty Images)

Another fashionable star that disappointed was Paula Patton- the cream gown with huge ruffle embellishments completely enveloped her sexy figure.

Kaley Cuoco (Source: Getty Images)

Kaley Cuoco (Source: Getty Images)

I love Kaley Cuoco and I love the concept of a floral gown but looking at her in this Rani Zakhem gown made me realize that floral prints almost always resemble curtains!

Zoe Saldana (Source: Getty Images)

Zoe Saldana (Source: Getty Images)

I am very torn about Zoe Saldana’s Prabal Gurung gown- I love it on top, but with the shoulder straps, detailed in the bottom, and other embellishment, there is way too much going on. Such a pity too! I watched Prabal Gurung win Project Runway- I am a huge fan!

Golden Globes 2013- The Best and Worst Looks

Happy New Year (a bit belated) and welcome to 2013! I was on a hiatus from blogging, but I am back. And this post is just for Aishwarya, who asked me when I am writing about the Golden Globes fashion.

So let’s get started, first with the looks I loved, then move on to the ones that were absolutely awful!

Best dressed at Golden Globes:

Emily Blunt (Source: Getty Images)

Emily Blunt (Source: Getty Images)

One of my favorite people to watch on the red carpet- Emily Blunt didn’t disappoint and stunned in this gorgeous golden gown by Michael Kors. One word- Beautiful!

Sofia Vergara (Source: Getty Images)

Sofia Vergara (Source: Getty Images)

Another staple in all my fashion posts-Sofia Vergara wows in this black strapless gown by Michael Cinco. I love her red carpet looks- she always dresses perfectly for her body type.

Jennifer Garner (Source: Getty Images)

Jennifer Garner (Source: Getty Images)

Sticking with the strapless theme, I loved Jennifer Garner in this Dior Haute Couture gown. Such a fantastic color, and it really makes her look radiant! I am also loving the earrings and bracelets– all in all, perfect look!

Anne Hathaway (Source: Getty Images)

Anne Hathaway (Source: Getty Images)

Best Supporting Actress Winner Anne Hathaway looks sophisticated and elegant in this white Chanel number.

Claire Danes (Source: Getty Images)

Claire Danes (Source: Getty Images)

Sticking with the red theme, which was a popular color on the carpet, Best Actress in TV drama winner Claire Danes stunned in this Versace gown. Can you believe she had a baby only a month ago!! Insane!!

The worst looks at Golden Globes:

Jessica Chastain (Source: Getty Images)

Jessica Chastain (Source: Getty Images)

OK starting with the look I was most disappointed with- during the Oscars 2012, Jessica Chastain was my best dressed. And given she is a strong contender to win, I expected her to bring her A game. This pale blue Calvin Klien gown looked absolutely ridiculous- it was a wonder how she didn’t have a wardrobe malfunction. But her hairstyle just pushed it to worst dress territory-slick hair back never works! Total disappointing!

Lucy Liu (Source: Getty Images)

Lucy Liu (Source: Getty Images)

The usually stunning Lucy Liu disappoints in this light blue Caroline Herrera gown. The design and prints look more suited to be drapes or tablecloth rather than a red carpet gown.

Rachel Weisz (Source: Getty Images)

Rachel Weisz (Source: Getty Images)

Maybe its my personal bias, but I have never been a fan of the sheer arms and leg and solid middle trend. Rachel Weisz looks a bit drab in this black polka dot Louis Vuitton dress.

Hally Berry (Source: Getty Images)

Hally Berry (Source: Getty Images)

The usually stunning Halle Berry looked out of place in this Versace gown, which seems more suited for the beach rather than a red carpet! The prints and colors are dull and the ridiculous ‘Angelina Jolie’ leg trend is the final nail in the coffin. Halle, I expected more!

Eva Longoria (Source: Getty Images)

Eva Longoria (Source: Getty Images)

And keeping with the ridiculous ‘Angelina Jolie’ leg trend, another red carpet hottie that I love to watch- Eva Longoria- disappointed in this black Emilio Pucci gown. The neckline, the leg and back- it was all a bit too much!

My favorite Golden Globes 2012 gowns

Yesterday marked the beginning of the my most eagerly awaited time of the year: Award season! I haven’t seen Joan Rivers fashion police yet, but I must say this year’s award season is very ho-hum–same colors and trends. One strong color trend was the white– some of the gowns looked more like bridal gowns!

My favorite gowns for this year:

Source: Getty Images

I love Sofia Vergara, and in this fishtail gown by Vera Wang with Harry Winston diamonds, she looks absolutely heavenly. I am never a fan of fishtail gowns, and I didn’t think it would work on a curvy woman, but it fits her like a glove. Blue is such an awesome color on her!

Source: Getty Images

As one of the young and happening starlets, Emma Stone was the centre of attention. She attracted attention in this gorgeous plunging berry gown, with contrasting red accents and dramatic belt by Lanvin. Mi amore!

Source: Getty Images

Jessica Alba looks radiant in this stunning Gucci beaded gown with a hint of pink and the right amount of bling, courtesy of Bulgari jewels. What a comeback after her second baby!

Source: Getty Images

Speaking of yummy mommies, Natalie Portman looks like a knock out in this pink and red gown by Lanvin (a popular favorite this year!)

Source: Getty Images

One of my red carpet favorites is the ever-graceful Kate Beckinsale. Keeping with the popular bridal trend, Kate looks gorgeous in this white strapless gown by Roberto Cavalli. Bridal chic indeed!

Taking a break from her usual dark hues, Angelina Jolie stunned in a stunning ivory number with contrasting blood red accents by Atelier Versace. Sparkling change!
